A Ritual for Slow Magic
The Sagittarius Full Moon is slowing showing up in many different ways. It’s a time for slowing down and nesting into magic. It’s time for Slow Magic.
I’ve never been one to stay someplace for very long. I had a childhood full of moving around. I embraced the college years specifically for the lack of stability that they include. I followed this into my 20’s fighting what society expected of me; refusing to settle down and accept a life that I clearly had no interest in. It was a hard decade. I then spent some intense years chasing my career dreams. I had little time for anything else.
Now I’m settling into the life I always wanted at a young age. I have a little piece of land, a roof over my head, an herb garden and slow days where I get to create magic. I’m starting to see this life emerge out of intense shedding over the last few years. I’m beginning to see the slow magic start to rise up out of the ashes of the last few years. There are little shimmers of hope. I welcome this slower energy into my life because it means I can heal and still work on my magic. It’s a welcome change.
Slow Magic happens when we give out an exhausted, frustrated and painful sigh of acceptance, resignation, even defeat. It happens when we are on the edge of giving up; when life becomes boring and mundane, but also oppressive. Slow Magic happens both when we give it space to work, and when we can’t think of what to do next.
I spend the first hour of each day making a cup of tea while saying good morning to my 17 year-old dog and cat. I open the kitchen doors to the deck and let the animals out. I say good morning to my deck garden and look at what need tending. I listen to the birds while getting my cup of tea just right and then I sit and sip and enjoy it. Some mornings the dog and cat are demanding, some days they settle into the routine with ease. I need this quiet time to prepare for my day. Some mornings I am bursting with energy, so I walk the dog for 2 miles. Some mornings, I am a little stiff and slow so we walk at midday instead. I tune in to my body and check on what it needs for the day. I tend to my spirit by being outside and enjoying the beauty; by giving myself this slow pace when I first wake up in order to be more present in the day. I slow down so I can feel what kind of magic is happening in the world and in my little corner.
I know what I’ve described may sound impossible to most and, honestly, three years ago I would have said ‘yuck’ to this this idea. I am cultivating and learning to live a life where I can both feed my soul and function in modern day life. I may not always have an hour in the morning to center myself this way, so what will I do then? Maybe it become a nightly Ritual, or a weekly one? The goal is to slow your energy down enough to allow a little slow magic to come in. Slow Magic is magic so big that we don’t want it all at once, it would be too much. It’s the Magic that happens after a life-changing event that shakes our foundation. It’s the Magic that brings you closer to your purpose but demands space and time to manifest. It’s a powerful antidote to burn out and fatigue. Slow Magic is watching your baby nephew get really excited about planes in the sky, saying hello to people when you pass them on a hiking trail, a family BBQ, the block party, or a Sunday morning brunch with friends. Slow Magic is meeting people unexpectedly and falling in love. It is being present in your body so you avoid what you know hurts you. It’s being present in your life so you set good boundaries and also can be flexible if it’s safe. Slow Magic is starting to see your own beauty after years of trying to conform to society’s idea of beauty. Slow Magic is beautiful in a very slow and steady way. It’s not the rush of ‘always on’ technology. It’s not the rush of fame or a huge number of followers. It’s not adrenaline-driven or stressful. It’s the opposite.
It’s the planting of a seed in winter in order to have results by summer. It’s the Magic that creates.
Ritual for Slow Magic
First, burn some incense, sage, or Palo Santo stick incense, as we want to smell this Full Moon to heighten our senses. We will work with fire energy but also smoke and air energy. You can also light a candle if that feels better. We want the whole room to feel the energy of Slow Magic. Now just sit and enjoy the moment. There is no rush to do or even think about the next thing. Watch the flame, watch the smoke and allow yourself to just settle in for a few moments. Know your ‘to do’ list will be attended to, the hustle you are working hard on will not fall apart if you take a little time to step away. You will miss nothing on social media if you leave your phone in the other room. You can return messages later. Just sit for a moment and settle in. If you would rather do this outside while walking, that’s also ok. We just want you to settle into your body, being as present as possible. Just let your mind wander.
Lately I’ve been thinking about my time living in a small medieval village in Italy, with the sunflower fields next to the vineyard. I’ve been thinking about the World Cup matches on the small TV in the town square; all ages watching, drinking, and eating gelato. The kids playing while the older generations watched the game with their neighbors. I can still feel what it was like to sit in the sun, writing in my journal and reading Henry Miller, Anais Nin and Hemingway. I experienced digesting not just the words, but also the feelings of everything around me. I’m having these same moments while I walk around Seattle and slow down. I’m returning to a time when I knew I was changing but couldn’t quite make out what the next steps were. I’m returning to where Slow Magic starts to appear and allow for new beginnings. I’m allowing my brain to slow down and not think about the future. I’m being present to my memories which are richer the more time I give to them.
If you want to use this Full Moon to plant some seeds, where can you slow down, enjoy the present moment and think about the results that will come these moments?
Are you ready to take a break from the constant striving in order to be in a place where you appreciate where you are? Are you ready to reach out to your community more and to make new connections? Are you ready to give up a little control of your expectations so you can allow a little Slow Magic to come in and exceed them? Are you ready to embrace your body, and your whole self, so you can continue to thrive?
Slowing down in your life is a form of Magic. It truly does bring about a deep sense of love and faith. It allows room for Magic.
Write down your thoughts in a journal if you want. Or use the fire energy to send out desires up into the Universe. Set intentions, release and make room for Magic.
